RSS is a mechanism for distributing information to interested parties.
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. The underlying technology is wonderfully simple yet at the same time is a little awkward for publishers without technical staff on hand.
Distributing information using RSS has some geat advantages over email:
1. Your information never gets trapped in a junk mail filter.
2. People can subscribe anonymously simply by clicking your RSS link - and lots of people are more willing to do this than to send out their email address and risk having it sold on to spammers.
3. Subscribers have access to your previously published information as well as the most recently publishing - giving them more opportunites to catch your news, deals and data.
4. You are in NO DANGER of being accidentally flagged as a spammer as you are not sending information to masses of people at the same time, your subscribers' computers simply request a list of recent publications from our program on your website.
5. When subscribers read one of your publications, their RSS reader beings them back to your site to do that.
6. By looking in your web site logs you can see how many people were interested in each of your published articles.
When rssFeedFolder is installed it only distributes information about changes to the folder(s) you designate as the feed folder(s), not the other areas of your website. So your website remains unaffected by the presence of RSS.
It is such a well used standard on the internet that all the major browsers (including Internet Explorer and Firefox) have RSS reader functionality built into them. Even Outlook Express has RSS functionality built in. Google have an online RSS reader, and so many companies have produced FREE RSS readers that the potential subscriber base for your feed is already massive before you begin.
